Keeping Watch – Thursday, May 16th, 2019

Stepping out of the car at the Sinissippi bike path, I noticed a pretty garden spot. So I made my way toward the small trees and shrubs to take a few quick photos. A red-winged blackbird dove at my head. As the bird took another pass at me I realized that its nest must be nearby. So, I moved quickly away.

A short time later, I watched a family of geese head down the bank into the river. One parent stayed behind. Approaching the goose was a man walking his golden retriever. When the dog spotted the goose, it began barking and lunging at the bird. The goose was undaunted. It hissed and flapped and snapped at the dog. The dog retreated. When babies are vulnerable, parents are strong.

God protects His children. As children of God in this world, we are still vulnerable to temptation and sin. We are exposed to wickedness and evil. We are threatened with death. How- ever, Jesus Christ is God’s strong arm, still protecting the children of God in the world through the Holy Spirit. On the night before His crucifixion Jesus prayed, “My prayer is not that You take them out of the world but that You protect them from the evil one” (John 17:15).

We cannot escape the trials and tribulations of this world. But the resurrection shows us the power of God in Christ to protect us while we live in this world.
