I, along with my mother, made this novena for my friends. My friends, a married couple, have had three beautiful boys. Their middle has a special need and he has been challenging to raise thus far. When I went home to see them last, my they talked of how they were not going to have any more children. This saddened me because sacred scripture is clear about children being a blessing and always something to reward to bring glory to God and blessings to people. And the one time that Onan “spilled his seed” (Genesis 38:9) in scripture, he was struck dead as punishment. However, I see how they might feel this way after their challenging little one. At the very least, I hoped that they would take this to prayer and practice natural family planning, the only licit way to plan a family (if used in discernment of God’s will). Because with NFP you are always ultimately open to life. Nevertheless, I listened to them and decided to pray as I thought spoken words, in this case, would not be best. We prayed the novena to the sweet Infant Jesus of Prague and I prayed another on the day he was scheduled to get a vasectomy. Our prayer was that they would not have the procedure done, that they would come to see that being open to life was the only course in line with God’s will and that they would try out NFP. At one point I also added that maybe the doctor could just become confused.
A few weeks later we heard what happened on the day of the scheduled procedure. Blew me away. I had faith that Jesus would come through, but this issue of ‘birth control’ must be close to His heart because what he did is so CLEARLY a miracle.
He (the husband) went for his procedure intending for it to go normally though he had expressed a desire for more children to my mother. He was intent on doing what his wife wanted, and that was that. He was given the medication (I am guessing a type of anesthetizing med) for the procedure. It affected him badly. Affected him badly enough (I think made him confused) that the doctor didn’t feel it would be right to continue the procedure. He went home with his fertility. He and his wife talked and decided to remain open to God’s plan for their family.
The first day of the novena, we kept finding infant Jesus medals and prayer cards throughout my grandma’s house. Signal graces.
Thank you infant Jesus. I love you Jesus even if I am bad at showing you. Make me better because you love me and have mercy on me, a sinner. Help all the world see Your way. Grant us peace, amen!
