The company that manufactures the antacid Rolaids uses the advertising slogan, “How do you spell relief?” R-O-L-A-I-D-S. That phrase has popped in and out of my mind for several years. This morning when the pastor asked, “How does Jesus spell love?” My mind answered (not Rolaids) C-R-O-S-S.
As I drove home from the service I pondered Jesus’ cross and arrived at this acronym: Christ Redeeming Our Sinful Selves. That is the love of Christ. He went to the cross to make atonement for our sinful nature. In the marvelous and mysterious community of the Triune God all three Persons, God the Father, God the Son and God the Spirit all spell love, C-R-O-S-S. Romans 5:8 confirms, “But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.” Jesus Himself said, “Greater love has no one than this, that he lay down his life for his friends” (John 15:13). Finally Paul writes, “But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God” (1 Corinthians 6:11).
The cross was God’s instrument of love. Jesus was the sacrificial Lamb of love. And the Spirt of God was the almighty power of love that conquered death and raised our Savior to life. Those who believe in God’s love at the cross receive eternal life.
For all who believe in Christ’s redeeming love on the cross our sinful selves are transformed into saintly souls.
