I remember, O Lord, that in your great creative work in the first verses of Genesis, it was by your Spirit and Word that you made order out of the formless TOHU BAVOHU, the chaos of deep. Your Spirit brooded over the face of the deep and you uttered your Word: “Let there be light.” You separated light from darkness to make day and night and you separated earth from the sea to make dry land appear.
Now I ask, is the destructive, chaotic, formless cell growth of the cancer within me, another manifestation of that same disorderly chaos of the deep over which you triumphed by your Word and Spirit in creating the world?
I also remember that in the letter to the Ephesians chapter 6, the apostle speaks of the “equipment” we need in our struggle against the destructive powers of evil and decay, equipment like the belt of truth around our waist, righteousness as our breastplate, shoes of peace, faith as a shield to protect us from burning arrows of the Evil One, salvation as a helmet, and the sword of the Spirit which is the Word of God, in which your same Spirit and Word come together. This “Sword of the Spirit which is the Word of God” is the only piece of equipment you provide here, which has a handle which we are invited to grasp, take up and use.
Gracious God, if I may be so bold, in enacted prayer I now take up this Sword of the Spirit which is the Word of God that you provide and I strike to smite, to slay, to kill the destructive power animating the chaotic growth of cells in my body, the cancer that threatens my very existence. Gracious God, honor thou this enacted prayer of faith so that your very own creative order may be restored in the life and growth of the cells in my body. So let it be most gracious, holy and compassionate God. Amen.
